Mr. Hoban: To ask the Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills (1) what the projected (a) total budget and (b) administration costs of each of the research councils is for (i) 2007-08 and (ii) 2008-10; [148914]
(2) what the (a) total expenditure and (b) total administration cost of each of the research councils was in each year since 1997. [148915]
Ian Pearson: The total expenditure and total administration cost of each research council since 1997 is given in the following tables. From 2004-05 all of the research councils have adopted a standard definition for administration costs. Prior to this there were some definitional differences between the research councils. The total expenditure figures for 2007-08 are the budget allocations. Budget allocations for 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 have not yet been made.

Mr. Hoban: To ask the Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills what the expenditure of each of the research councils was on hospitality and entertainment in each year since 1997. [148913]
Ian Pearson:
The expenditure of each research council on hospitality and entertainment since 1997 is given in the following table. Research councils hospitality expenditure primarily takes the form of refreshments
for visitors, particularly those undertaking review work or providing advice as members of boards or committees. The research councils do not generally fund any entertainment activities.
