Railways: Tees Valley

Ms Dari Taylor: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what assessment she has made of the case for expansion and modernisation of the local rail network that serves Tees Valley from Darlington. [153376]

Mr. Tom Harris: Network Rail has developed a programme of Route Utilisation Strategies which examine detailed options for developing the railway and producing business cases to support the options. They are currently consulting on the strategy for the East Coast Main Line and other related lines including those through Darlington and the Tees Valley. I understand that the local authorities and regional bodies in that area have been working closely with Network Rail on the development of the strategy and will be responding to the consultation exercise.

[152808]

Jim Fitzpatrick: Officials from the Department responded on 18 July to the invitation that had been sent to them.
