That the Committee takes note of European Union Document No. 8179/07 and Addenda 1 and 2, Commission Communication, A policy to reduce unwanted by-catches and eliminate discards in European fisheries; and agrees with the Governments initial assessment of the proposal that it represents a sound basis for debate, but that the discussion of possible solutions needs to take full account of the mixed nature of many of the EU fisheries and balance the socio-economic interests involved, whilst the UK are mindful of the importance of effective enforcement and control and the resource implications thereof.
