Memorandum submitted by Reverend Dr Dick Rodgers (CJ&I 188)

I am concerned at the prospect of any further impediment of the free expression of Christian doctrine in public life as is threatened by the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill.

I believe that the rights of people engaging in homosexual behaviour are sufficiently upheld already and that further restrictions would be bad for society as a whole.

I am particularly concerned by cases highlighted by the Lawyers Christian Fellowship including the well-known cases of:

Edinburgh University Christian Union's attempts to hold a course on sexual purity.

Mr Harry Hammond.

Steven Green.

Some Glasgow Firemen.

The Christian Police Association.

As can be seen on the website of Christian Concern for our Nation.

I would be most grateful for an opportunity to come to address the committee.

Leviticus 18: 22 seems quite clear to me on these matters. It says. Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman. That is detestable. (NIV translation) We should stick to this in matters of public life and morals or our national and social life and our influence for good in the world will suffer.
