Memorandum submitted by David and Margaret Relf (CJ&I 362)

Dear Members of the Committee

Criminal Justice & Immigration Bill - Religious hatred offence too wide.

We are very concerned at the present government's proposals to amend this Bill to make it a criminal offence to 'incite hatred on the grounds of sexuality'.

As Christians we believe we should love all but feel the introduction of this proposed law is ill-advised and poses a considerable danger to freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

In any event we feel this proposal is unnecessary as all are protected from assault and threatening words or behaviours under the present criminal law.

The Bible makes it clear especially in the great Apostle Paul's Epistle to the Romans chapter 1 where the Apostle, by Divine inspiration, condemns these unnatural practices.

In the light of the above we would urge the Committee to uphold freedom of speech and to recognize that the proposed amendment is not only unnecessary but would endanger our existing freedoms.

We look forward to hearing from your secretary after the submissions have been considered. Thank you.
