BBC response to request for information
on training materials used to meet concerns about trust in broadcasting
Safeguarding Trust. In response to the
issues around trust in broadcasters during the summer of 2007,
the BBC has developed a programme of face-to-face workshops and
online training called Safeguarding Trust.
The Safeguarding Trust workshops look
at the nature of the problems which developed across the industry
over the summer; at the issues around the running of competitions;
and around the use of artifice in output. A range of real and
hypothetical scenarios are discussed and the key learning in the
workshops is in knowing how to draw the line between production
artifice and deceit.
The workshops are mandatory for the 17,000 content
producers across all BBC divisions. Senior leaders from the independent
producers will also attend. The workshops started on 12 November
and as of 26 November, around 2,600 BBC staff had attended and
the feedback has been very positive. The intention is for all
relevant staff to have completed them by the end of March 2008.
A special online website has been designed which
will be available to all independent producers with some elements
made mandatory for BBC staff and any independent producer working
on a BBC production. This material uses hypothetical scenarios
to look at issues of trust throughout the production process from
idea to promotion. A substantial section also looks at running
competitions and sets out the BBC's new rules and Code of Conduct
governing competitions. This section will be mandatory for all
staff and independent producers involved in competitions. The
online material is expected to be launched in mid-December.
