Memorandum submitted by Park Infant and Nursery School, Mansfield, Notts

Aim

To develop thinking skills across the curriculum.

Y2 working with Dorothy Heathcote

Dorothy worked using 'Mantle off the Expert' strategies with excellent results. The children found themselves able to apply their limited experiences to situations well beyond, eg. at one point writing instructions for how to carry a very large box across the desert on a camel,-- all perfectly relevant to the work in hand. Language skills, writing skills, empathy and problem solving skills were all enhanced. Much of the work was carried out in mixed ability groups developing cooperation and inclusion.

The strategies have been applied, with success, in various areas of the curriculum and we are now embedding them into the planning.

Children's Response

After the project the children all wrote to Dorothy and the common theme was 'It was such fun but I learned such a lot and didn't know it was work'

Future

Dorothy Heathcote is coming back into school to give INSET to all the staff and staff from a neighbouring school. She will then work, in turn, with our other classes in K.S. 1.
