CHANGES IN
THE EUROPE
NETWORK
I wanted to draw your attention to changes in
prospect to our network in Europe as a result of modifications
to the way in which we provide services overseas.
We currently have 41 sovereign Posts, 26 subordinate
Posts and 105 honorary consulates in Europe (Annex 1). Commercial,
consular and visa services constitute approximately one third
of activity in these Posts. This is likely to change over the
course of the next five years.
We are closing Gothenburg and streamlining our
commercial resources. We also have plans to arrange our consular
and visas operation in a more resource-efficient way whilst retaining
the current level of service.
The changes in our commercial operation involve
a redeployment of resource from European and other markets towards
the emerging markets such as China, India, Russia and Turkey.
Emerging markets, as you are aware, are a particular focus of
UKTI's five-year strategy Prosperity in a Changing World,
which was published on 20 July. Resource shifts from our Posts
in Europe and elsewhere will take place over the period to March
2008. They will include centralising commercial resources in Stockholm
following the closure of Gothenburg in December 2006.
We are also considering options to centralise
our passport and visa issuing functions in Europe, following the
introduction of biometric passports and visas.
I will be happy to update you at any time on
these modifications to service delivery in Europe.
