Select Committee on Foreign Affairs Written Evidence

6-Letter from Foundation of Medical Professionals Alliance in Taiwan

I read from the East Asia Report dated 13 August 2006 that the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee recommended the British Government to support Taiwan's bid for full membership of the WTO. Hence I would like to express my deep gratitude for your support on behalf of our Foundation which has been dedicated to the bid for more that 10 years.

According to the poll conducted by our foundation up to 80% of Taiwanese people support their government to apply for full membership of the WHO. The poll result reflects that people of Taiwan believe participation in WTO is crucial to their health and protection. On the other hand the United Kingdom's advocacy of democracy and human rights share the same value with Taiwan's recent liberalisation and democratisation.

Under the threat of avian influenza epidemics, any gaps in the network of epidemic prevention would cause tremendous damage to human life and economy globally. Therefore, Taiwan as the 16th largest trading nation and the transportation hub of East Asia should not be excluded from the organisation which aims for promoting the world health. In addition Taiwan's achievements on public health service and the medical relief that it provides to the third world has proved that Taiwan is capable of making more contributions to the WHO.

Once again on behalf of the people of Taiwan I would like to appreciate your understanding of Taiwan's need for being a member of the World Health Organisation. I will head the Taiwan for WHO lobby composed of MPs and doctors to visit your country from 19-21 September of this year. I hope that at the time we will have the opportunity to express our gratitude to your Committee in person.

President
