Select Committee on Foreign Affairs Written Evidence

7-Letter from Taipei Representative Office in the United Kingdom

I am writing to thank you for sending me a copy of your esteemed Committee's two-volume report on "East Asia" published on 13 August this year. Having read the report including its "conclusions and recommendations", I am convinced that the Commons Foreign Relations Committee has done a great job in examining the overall situations in East Asia and completed one of the most comprehensive reports ever attempted in an effort to address most of the important issues facing the region as well as the issue of the rise of China. The Committee under your able leadership indeed deserves the most encouraging burst of applause from those who care about the region and my utmost respect for the report's balanced and constructive conclusions and recommendations.

I would also like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation for the Committee's insightful recommendations that the British Government set out its attitude towards full membership of the World Health Organisation for Taiwan, increase contacts with Taiwan at a political level, increase the number of informal ministerial visits to Taiwan and work within the EU to maintain the arms embargo on the People's Republic of China.

As Taiwan Representative in the United Kingdom, I look forward to furthering the substantive and friendly relations between our two countries. Please feel free to provide me with any suggestions you may have in our mutual endeavour to further strengthen the existing good relationship our two peoples.

Edgar Lin

Taiwan Representative
