The following answer was given to a supplementary question:

Hazel Blears: ... I am sure that the hon. Member for Manchester, Withington (Mr. Leech) is aware that his council in Manchester is a four-star local authority providing excellent services, with an excellent direction of travel.

Letter of correction from Hazel Blears:

It has been brought to my attention that a reference I made at my Department's Oral Questions on 16 October was incorrect.

I referred to Manchester as a ‘four-star local authority providing excellent services, with an excellent direction of travel’ [16 October 2007 Column 692]. In doing so, I was referring incorrectly to the assessment made by the Audit Commission of Manchester's performance in delivering its Supporting People programme.

For Supporting People, the Audit Commission assessed Manchester as providing ‘an excellent three star service that has excellent prospects for improvement’. This, rather than a four-star scoring, is the highest rating achievable for that programme. I would be grateful if a correction on this could be noted in the Official Record.

I am copying this letter to Eric Pickles MP and Greg Hands MP.
