John Penrose: To ask the Secretary of State for Justice (1) if he will make an assessment of the likely effect on numbers of prison places of any custodial sentences handed out to 17 year olds who have not paid fines for truanting in the first year following implementation of such a policy; [163650]

None. The main enforcement system is not a criminal one and in practice a custodial sentence for non-participation is not a realistic prospect.
Mr. Paterson: To ask the Secretary of State for Justice how many fires were started by prisoners at each young offender institution in England and Wales in each of the last five years. [168550]
Maria Eagle: The following table lists the total number of fire incidents reported in the incident report system at young offender institutions in England and Wales in each of the last five years. Fire incidents may be actual fires but could, for example, include mischievous activation of fire alarms. To ascertain whether the incident was an actual fire would require the analysis of each incident report, which could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. The data is held in financial years.

Mr. Hanson: Between 1 April 2003 and 31 March 2007 12,967 injuries to staff and prisoners were recorded in young offender institutions.
Mr. Paterson: To ask the Secretary of State for Justice how many (a) prisoner on prisoner assaults, (b) riots and (c) assaults on staff there were at each young offender institution in England and Wales in each of the last five years. [168551]
