(1) All figures are full-time equivalents (FTE) rounded to the nearest whole number.
(2) The London totals comprise officer totals for Metropolitan police and City of London police. They are ‘not’ totals of the London boroughs because they also include Heathrow and Central Services. Excludes officers on career breaks and maternity/paternity leave.

A letter has been sent to the hon. Member and made available in the Library of the House.

Police Custody

Mr. Garnier: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department pursuant to the answer of 20 February 2007, Official Report, column 1227W, on police custody, on how many occasions Operation Safeguard was used in England and Wales between 1 January 2006 and 1 April 2007. [134069]

[Official Report, 30 April 2007, Vol. 459, c. 1416-17W.]

Letter from David Hanson:

Errors have been identified in the written answer given to the hon. and learned Member for Harborough (Mr. Garnier) on 30 April 2007. The correct answer should have been:

Mr. Sutcliffe: Operation Safeguard was reactivated on 22 January 2007. Between 22 January and 30 March 2007, Operation Safeguard was used on 9,640 occasions. This does not correspond precisely to a number of prisoners: one occasion means one prisoner night in a police cell.

I apologise that this information was not properly provided at the time the question was answered. I am arranging for a correction to be made in Hansard.

I am copying this letter to Gerry Sutcliffe.

Mrs. Gillan: To ask the Secretary of State for Justice how many convicted prisoners have been held overnight in police cells or custody suites in Wales; and for how many nights each prisoner has been so held, broken down by police force area. [162846]

Letter fr om David Hanson:

Errors have been identified in the written answer given to the hon. Member for Chesham and Amersham (Mrs. Gillan) on 12 November 2007. The correct answer should have been:

Mr. Hanson: Figures for convicted prisoners are not held separately. Between 22 January and 7 November 2007, convicted and remand prisoners were held under Operation Safeguard in police cells in Wales on 4,289 occasions. The number of occasions does not correspond precisely to the number of prisoners: one occasion means one prisoner night in a police cell. This total breaks down by police forces as follows:
