Mr. Austin Mitchell: To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government what estimate she has made of the total capital receipts under the right to buy; what the effect of these in public sector borrowing has been; when the revenue received was spent; and what plans she has for the treatment of further revenues. Disabled People (Poverty)

Mrs. McGuire: ...There were fewer people on the benefit in 1997 than there are now because it was introduced in 1992, and even the most basic mathematics indicates that it would be nigh on impossible only four and a bit years after a benefit is introduced to have a significant number of people on it long term.

[Official Report, 11 March 2008, Vol. 473, c. 20-21WH.]

Letter of correction from Anne McGuire:

An error has been identified in my speech during the Westminster Hall adjournment debate on Disabled People (Poverty) on 11 March 2008. The correct statement should have been:

Mrs. McGuire: ...There were fewer people on the benefit in 1997 than there are now because it was introduced in 1995, and even the most basic mathematics indicates that it would be nigh on impossible only two and a bit years after a benefit is introduced to have a significant number of people on it long term.
