Railways: Alcoholic Drinks

Mr. Evennett: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if she will assess the merits of amending the national conditions of carriage for train operating companies to ban the drinking from, and carrying of, open containers of alcohol by passengers. [204944]

Mr. Tom Harris: Train companies can already ban alcohol from trains using their powers under the railway byelaws. The byelaws also permit train companies and the police to remove disorderly passengers from trains and stations as well as prosecute for antisocial behaviour.

Railways: Franchises

Norman Baker: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if she will set out in tabular form the payments expected to be (a) made to and (b) received from each train operating company for each year of its franchise from 1997 to 2015, giving the total net cost to the public purse of all franchises for each in this period. [206172]

Mr. Tom Harris: This information is available from a number of sources, including the Strategic Rail Authority’s historic annual report and accounts; the Department for Transport’s website at www.dft.gsi.gov.uk: and National Rail Trends, the figures for which can be found on the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) website at:

I will arrange for composite tables to be prepared and place copies in the Library of the House.

Roads: Accidents

Norman Baker: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many (a) personal injury accidents and (b) personal injury accidents involving at least one heavy goods vehicle there were on each motorway in each year since 1997. [205106]

Mr. Tom Harris: The total number of road traffic accidents that have resulted in personal injury (PIAs) and the number involving at least one heavy goods vehicle (HGV), (that is, a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes gross weight), in each year since 1997, are listed in the following tables. The statistics include all motorways that are the responsibility of the Highways Agency.
