Police: Firearms
Mr. Ruffley:
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) on how many operations firearms were issued to police officers in England and Wales in each year since 1997; in how many of these operations weapons were discharged by police officers; and how many police officers were qualified to carry firearms in each of the last nine years; [219102]
(2) how many police officers were armed while on duty in each of the last 10 years in (a) England and Wales and (b) each police force area. [219104]

The number of police operations in which firearms were authorised to be used in each force area since 1997, and the number of authorised firearms officers in those forces, are shown in the following tables. The number of incidents where a conventional firearm was used is also shown.
Statistics on the police use of firearms are published annually by way of a written ministerial statement. Statistics for the last five years were published in my written ministerial statement of 31 January 2008.
