The introduction of ICD-10 in 2001 means that the number of deaths from this cause, before 2001 are not completely comparable with later years.
(2) Figures are for deaths registered in each calendar year.

Figures for Drug poisoning are where the underlying cause of death was due to drug poisoning (ICD-10 codes are shown in the following table). Figures for Drug misuse include all drug poisoning deaths where a drug controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 was mentioned on the death certificate.
