Select Committee on Business and Enterprise Written Evidence

Letter from Julian Brazier MP

Thank you for your letter of 6 December regarding the Post Office consultation on the Network Change Programme.

I have to say that I am very concerned about a closure in my constituency which has an unusual feature. The Post Office announced a decision to move our main post office to a first floor location in WH Smith, just after the end of the consultation period on sub-post offices. They failed to take into account, however, the impact of this move in consulting on two of our branches, Northgate and St. Dunstan's.

In particular, the map and usage figures that they produced in support of the decision are all based on the old position of the main Post Office and not the new one. Obviously moving the main post office south east would have been likely to provide more work for the two sub-post offices in north west Canterbury—Northgate and St Dunstan's.

I attach a copy of the maps and have marked the new position of the main post office. Two further points are relevant. First, the capacity of the main post office is materially lower than at the old site. Second, the one remaining site in North West Canterbury shown on the map is well over a mile away, up a very steep hill.
