At the Select Committee hearing on 24 June 2008
Mr Oaten asked for information on the percentage increase in the
last year for customers who are defaulting on their bills. I would
therefore be grateful if you could place this response before
the Select Committee.
The total number of debtors in June 2008, compared
to June 2007, has increased by 3.8%.
We have improved our practices in the way in
which we help customers to manage debt. In particular the number
of customers disconnected in the first half of 2008 was less than
half those of the corresponding period in 2007. various schemes
and payment methods are in place to help manage debt levels and
£3.5 million of debt of vulnerable customers has either been
written-off or put on hold over the last two years under our "First
Steps" social programme.
