My constituency is bordered by the river Aire
and the river Wharfe. The river Aire, especially, gives cause
for concern.
During the recent bout of terrible flooding,
it would appear that the flood prevention schemes held up reasonably
well. The major problems were caused by the overburdened drainage
system. One of the problems that desperately needs to be resolved
is the lack of accountability. It is very difficult to track down
who is responsible between the local authority or the private
water companies.
It would be very helpful if the committee would
consider this point when carrying out it's inquiry.
