Memorandum submitted by The Long Distance
Walkers Association (DMB 07)
The Long Distance Walkers Association is a body
which works to further the aims of those who enjoy long distance
walking. As such we are always very interested in ensuring that
long distance paths are available for members of the public and
that these are used and enjoyed.
We are therefore delighted to hear that the
Draft Marine Bill is making provision for the public to have access
to a long distance route around the British Coastline which at
the present time is impossible in some areas of the country. Giving
the public the right to access the coastline will bring huge benefits
to walkers, local communities and to tourism, and if this means
that people who enjoy long distance walking, such as our members,
are able to walk a long distance route along the coastline without
being diverted several miles inland at some points, it will be
a much used and valuable asset.
We realise that the provisions may need to have
flexibility as with coastal erosion and other threats to such
a coastal path, then the ability to divert it if necessary is
essential. However we feel that there is a real benefit in having
within the legislative framework, a recognition of a public right
to access the British coastline.
We very much look forward to seeing the future
passage of this Draft Bill. Long distance walking is an activity
that is growing in popularity and this should be welcomed and
encouraged in society. Whilst we realise that privacy and ensuring
protection of wildlife habitats etc is important, we would welcome
the idea of such a coastal corridor. We would also support the
views and representations put forward to this Inquiry from the
Ramblers Association.
