Letter from the Prisoner Ombudsman for
Northern Ireland to the Chair of the Indpendent Monitoring Boards
I have had sight of your evidence to the Northern
Ireland Affairs Committee and feel it appropriate to comment upon
your evidence in relation to prisoner complaints to myself.
I am not clear from the transcript whether when
you were stating that "it is probably about five to ten inmates
who are sending the complaints that will be upheld" you are
referring to the complaints received by and upheld by IMB or to
those received by and upheld by myself. If you intended the latter
I would request that this be corrected.
The facts are that I have received 113 complaints
from 56 different individual prisoners housed at HMP Magilligan.
I have upheld in excess of 60 of those cases
of this total that have been investigated so far.
I am copying this letter to the Committee Clerk
for clarification.
