To

Impose duties on the Highways Agency and other public authorities to

promote tourism by providing or permitting to be provided appropriate road

signage; and for connected purposes.  

Be it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and

consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present

Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

Duty of highway authorities

(1)   

It shall be a duty of every highway authority to have regard to the promotion

of tourism in the local area when making decisions relating to the content and

placing of road signs.

(2)   

For the purposes of this section “highway authority” has the meaning given in

section 192 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 (c. 52).

Duty of local planning authorities

(1)   

It shall be a duty of every local planning authority to have regard to the

contribution of tourism to the local economy when considering applications

for permission to erect signs relating to local tourist destinations and facilities.

(2)   

For the purposes of this section “local planning authority” has the meaning

given in Part 1 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (c. 8).

Short title and extent

(1)   

This Act may be cited as the Road Signs (Tourist Destinations and Facilities)

Act 2009.

(2)   

This Act extends to England only.
