Miss McIntosh:
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what assessment he has made of differences in the delivery of policing in (a) rural and (b) urban areas; and if he will make a statement. [292370]
Mr. Hanson:
The Government do not make assessments on the differences in the delivery of policing in rural and urban areas. Under the Police Performance Assessment Framework, police forces were compared within a similar group of forces. Selection criteria for these groups took into account a range of socio-economic factors including urbanisation and rurality. Following the publication of the Policing Green Paper, responsibility for assessing policing performance shifted from the Home Office to Her Majesty's inspectorate of constabulary (HMIC).
The HMIC are currently reviewing the mechanisms for qualitative assessments and developing rounded assessments for the delivery of policing services.
Police Authorities: Pay
John Mann:
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what the salary is of the (a) chair and (b) vice chair of each police authority in England. [291980]
Mr. Hanson:
Chairs and vice chairs of police authorities receive no salary. Under regulation 29 of the Police Authority Regulations 2009, each police authority must publish the arrangements they have in place for their chair and vice chairs' expenses and allowances. This information will be available from the individual police authorities but is not held centrally.
Police: Manpower
Chris Huhne:
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many police officers there were (a) per head of population and (b) per notifiable offence in each police force area in each year since 1997. [291186]
Alan Johnson [holding answer 14 September 2009]: The available data are given in the following tables:
Police officers( 1) (FTE)( 2) per 100,000 of the population by police force, as at 31 March 1997 to 31 March 2009

(1) This table is based on full-time equivalent figures that have been rounded to the nearest whole number. Because of rounding, there may be an apparent discrepancy between totals and the sums of the constituent items. (2) Figures up to 31 March 2002 exclude staff on career breaks or maternity/paternity leave. The figures for 31 March 2003 onwards figures include those on career breaks or maternity/paternity leave. (3) Boundary changes on 1 April 1996 transferred resources for the policing of the Rhymney Valley from South Wales Police to Gwent Police. (4) Boundary changes on 1 April 2000 transferred some resources from the Metropolitan Police to Essex, Hertfordshire and Surrey police forces. (5) Officers per 100,000 population for City of London and Metropolitan Police are combined.
