Post offices - securing their future - Business and Enterprise Committee Contents

Memorandum submitted by Janet H. Holland

I am writing with suggestions about extending the use of local Post Offices.

1.  NEW AREAS

It would be helpful to disseminate information about the availability of Government and other services.

They are already the hub of information for local events.

People in rural communities—particularly the extremely elderly and those on low income are not getting into the urban areas to Libraries etc, and are frequently not on the internet.

This means that those who may be most in need of information about help available are not getting it.

Rural Post Offices in particular could be a great help to you.

2.  EXTENSION OF EXISTING SERVICES

It would be more helpful if more banks could be encouraged to allow their customers to access their services through the Post Office—this would cut down on car use and emissions and save time and energy.

Where there is a tie-up it seems to work very well.

I am grateful that the government does seem to have realised how important the Post Offices are to those of us who live in Rural Areas.
