5 Conclusion
38. Scrutinising the work of the Department for
Communities and Local Government continues to pose a perhaps unique
challenge. The diffuse nature of its remit, and the extent to
which it relies on other actors to achieve its goals, make it
difficult to pursue a common theme throughout our work. This year
as previously, therefore, we have attempted to fulfil the duties
which the House has given us by ensuring that we take as wide
as possible a view of the Department's work, pursuing both issues
which routinely hit the headlineshousing, migrationand
those which do notOrdnance Survey, the skills of local
planning officers; issues of major strategic importancethe
relationship between central and local governmentand issues
of immediate concern to local peoplethe provision of public
toilets. We will continue to follow up previous inquiries and
to explore new avenues, to consider the Department's response
to the major issues of the day and to shine light in dark corners,
and in so doing hope to continue influencing the administration,
expenditure and policy of this Department for the good of the
people we represent.
