1 Introduction
1. This is the third of a series of Reports by
this Committee on its work. Unlike its predecessors,[1]
this Report covers a Parliamentary Session not a calendar year.
This change, which flows from a decision by the Liaison Committee
in November 2007 to move towards a Sessional basis for reports
by select committees on their work, enables the Committee to present
the Report alongside statistical information compiled and published
on a Sessional basis by order of the House.
2. The main purpose of this Report is to review
how the Committee's work has covered the core tasks for select
committees recommended by the Liaison Committee following a resolution
of the House on 14 May 2002. We have also taken the opportunity
to make some observations on our role and on matters of concern.
3. All of the reports and evidence published
by the Committee can be found on the Parliamentary website at
http://www.parliament.uk/parliamentary_committees/culture__media_and_sport.cfm,
as can the Committee's Formal Minutes, which are updated weekly.
The Committee agreed on 28 October 2008 that written evidence
submitted to each of the Committee's inquiries should be placed
on the Internet once the advertised closing date for submissions
to the relevant inquiry had passed, subject to the discretion
of the Committee Chairman and to any requests by authors that
submissions should be treated in confidence. The normal practice
of the Committee had, in the past, been to delay publication of
evidence until the end of an inquiry, when the Committee publishes
a Report.
