Science and Technology Facilities Council - Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Committee Contents

The Committee requested information in response to the question: What is the current (a) scientific and (b) technical staff complement at Daresbury, and how does this compare to the levels in 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and plans for 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12, after any early retirement schemes etc have been taken into account? And do you have figures for the number of (a) scientific and (b) technical staff who worked on the SRS who still work at Daresbury?

The figures provided below are based on "headcount" rather than "full time equivalent".

Numbers of scientific and technical staff[27]
Numbers at ScientificTechnical

It is not possible to provide equivalent figures for the years 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12. Within the period 2009-10, the only planned staffing reductions at Daresbury, taking into account known planned early retirement schemes, are:
ProgrammeTimescales Possible reductions needed
SRS Decommissioning[28]
2009-1027 (25 of which likely to be technical)
Shared Services2009-10 12 (administrative posts)

The SRS Decommissioning Project will be complete by 31 March 2010.

Specific technical and scientific staffing requirements for 2010 and beyond will become more clearly defined as projects progress, in particular as the committed investment in the Hartree and Detector Systems Gateway Centres is realised. It is not possible to provide more detailed information at this time, but the STFC's continued commitment to retaining Daresbury as a centre for world-class science should be stated.
