Letter from the Rt Hon John Denham MP,
Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills to
the Chairman, Phil Willis MP
At our meeting on 21 July you explained that
the IUSS Committee would prefer responses to its reports from
Research Councils to be submitted in separate documents, rather
than being included within the text of the Government's responses.
I am making arrangements for this to happen in respect of matters
for which the Councils are directly responsible. However, where
Councils provide advice to Government on matters which are properly
the sphere of Government policy and therefore contribute to the
Government's consolidated responses, Ministers will continue to
be responsible for the final text of the Government's response.
In these circumstances it would not be appropriate for the Councils'
responses to be separately identifiable from the Government's
response. The Councils will continue to submit their own evidence
(oral and written) to the Committee.
