Foreign and Commonwealth Office Annual Report 2007-08 - Foreign Affairs Committee Contents

E-mail to the Chairman of the Committee from Samer Muscati

As Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, I am hoping that you can initiate an investigation into a horrible scandal that has occurred at the British Embassy in Baghdad with the complicity of the FCO.

Basically, British KBR managers were abusing their Iraqi female staff. One of these women was fired after she did not perform sexual favours. The Embassy conducted an initial investigation and interviewed that woman along with two other local KBR employees. They were all credible, their statements were consistent and they had no motive to lie. The Deputy Ambassador believed them and concluded that there were significant grounds to warrant a further investigation.

Unfortunately, the FCO instructed KBR to conduct the investigation even though their own managers were implicated. The result was a sham. The Iraqis who spoke out were fired and a whitewash ensued. On top of everything that has happened, the ambassador recently awarded medals to the KBR culprits.

This abuse of KBR is systemic and widespread; US Congress is currently investigating sexual assault by KBR against female American contractors in Iraq.

Please let me know how I can get this matter investigated before Parliament.

To give you a little information about myself, I am a Canadian lawyer who worked out of the British Embassy in Baghdad for a period of 18 months.
