Richard Thomas, Chief Operating Officer, has
supplied the following answer to your question regarding the operating
deficit for BBC World Service in 2008:
"The operating deficit before interest and
tax for the year ended 31st March 2008 was indeed £0.2 million,
as the letter from Adele Brown points out. The £2.8m deficit
figure I quoted on 15th October is the net position for the year
after interest, tax and transfers between reserves are taken into
account. It is shown in the statement of income and expenditure
on page 31 of the Annual Report as the transfer from the operating
reserve on the bottom line of the table. The movements in this
table show how the two figures are reconciled.
