Foreign and Commonwealth Office Annual Report 2007-08 - Foreign Affairs Committee Contents

Email to the Committee Specialist from BBC World Service

Richard Thomas, Chief Operating Officer, has supplied the following answer to your question regarding the operating deficit for BBC World Service in 2008:

"The operating deficit before interest and tax for the year ended 31st March 2008 was indeed £0.2 million, as the letter from Adele Brown points out. The £2.8m deficit figure I quoted on 15th October is the net position for the year after interest, tax and transfers between reserves are taken into account. It is shown in the statement of income and expenditure on page 31 of the Annual Report as the transfer from the operating reserve on the bottom line of the table. The movements in this table show how the two figures are reconciled.

If any further clarification is needed, please do not hesitate to ask."

As Richard suggests, please do get in touch if you need anything further from us.
