Email from BBC World Service to the Committee
Specialist
As promised, here is the response from BBC World
Service to your letter of 19 December regarding the impact of
the recent attacks in Mumbai on its operations in India.
"The Mumbai attacks have not had a major
effect on BBC World Service reporters working on the ground in
India. The BBC's bureaux and reporters in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore,
Calcutta and Chennai continue to operate, bringing accurate and
impartial news to the region and the world.
Extensive coverage of the attacks was carried
on the Hindi and Urdu services on radio and online, as well as
coverage in English and other language services. Special programming
on 26 December on the Hindi Service looked at the effect of the
attacks a month on.
Online figures for the last week of November
at the time of the attacks show that the number of users for the
BBC Hindi website more than doubled and the figures for the BBC
Urdu website were 50% up on average.
Users for the English news site in India peaked
on 27 November rising to three times the average number of users."
