OT 368: E-mail from Keren Lomas: Bermuda
I join with all other concerned citizens of Bermuda in voicing great displeasure at the dictatorial conduct of Premier Dr. Ewart Brown in bringing the detainees here to Bermuda without any public discussion. Furthermore, I believe that a lot of Bermudians will be concerned at the promise of Bermuda Status which accords them rights to employment without permits and the ability to purchase property, privileges that are very hard to come by where expatriates who have given of their labour and years are unable to attain such status. I was one of 3 expatriates who last obtained such status when it was discretionary. Now expatriates have to have been here since 1989 in order to obtain residency status without Bermudian status. Born Bermudians are also concerned because they will have greater competition in the workplace and in the real estate market, which is undesirable in an island just 21 miles square.
Thank you for investigating this matter with the Governor. I hope the right decision is made for Bermudians.
