OT 269: Letter to the Chairman from Ilaria Zanier

I write to you following the transmission on Radio 4 on 6 July 2008.  I was very interested to hear the concerns regarding the governing and development of the Islands.

I holidayed on the islands in January 2007.  We chose them particularly as they were described as being unspoilt.

I do have very fond memories of my time spent there, however, I also had concerns, and following recent communication from Salt Cay and from a friend (a Belonger) I remain concerned.

The islands were booming, construction was evidenced to a grand scale in most areas of the island, we were lucky to find a few quiet areas, but that was mostly from talking to the local we befriended. I was disappointed to see that there a few hotels being constructed on Grace bay that superseded the regulatory three storey.  On discussion with locals, they seemed apathetic. The American hotels seemed to get away with anything.

Haitians seemed to be living in extreme poverty. I seem to recall that some children are abandoned or orphaned, however, I don't remember the source. I am a registered social worker and was disappointed that there is not a helpline set up for the islanders and no sanctuary for any of the children.  Animals are protected and their advocates seem more vocal and ubiquitous.  I would hope since my visit the same protection is offered to children.

My latest concern is the outlook for the small island of Salt Cay. You may be or not be aware of the current outcry about the possible massive development of the island. There is a petition, people have signed from all over the world, Belongers have vocalised their opinion.
