Memorandum submitted by Rt Hon Frank Field
MP (Session 2006-07, P 44)
I understand that the Committee is now looking
into Written Parliamentary Questions and how they are answered.
Can I suggest that one area you might consider should be the format
in which answers are provided?
Currently, Government departments send out letters
to Members with their responses, which arrive in the office the
day after the answer date. Given that we can now e-mail questions
to the Table Office immediately, might it not be appropriate for
departments to begin to answer questions in a similar fashion
so that they might be received more quickly?
I hope you will take this into consideration
during the inquiry.
