Memorandum from Whimple Parish Council

In response to the South West Regional Committee's call for evidence on transport in the South West, Whimple Parish Council discussed the matter at a recent meeting.

Whimple is a village in East Devon with a population of approximately 1,500. The village does not see itself as being linked to one town - Honiton, Ottery St Mary and Exeter are providers of services of shopping, health centres, dentists, hospitals and education as well as employment opportunities. Whimple has good transport links and a valuable railway station that provides links to Honiton and Exeter.

Whimple would like you to consider the following points when deciding future priorities for transport provision in the region:-

1) Roads

a) The Council requests that the A30 from Exeter to Honiton should be re-surfaced, as soon as possible, along the stretches which have a concrete surface at present. This was promised some time ago.

b) The Council requests that the A30 is dualled from Honiton to Illminster, with the villages in East Devon bypassed.

2) Railway

The Council would like to see the line dualled from Exeter to Salisbury. They appreciate the difficulty with bridges so request extra passing loops to increase the number of trains that are able to stop at Whimple. They would like half-hourly trains from Exeter to Honiton.

Whimple Parish Council thank you for your consideration of these matters.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs G Turner

Parish Clerk
