Notes:
1. Total number of staff who had more than 10 working days lost to absence in the rolling year
2. Data extracted from epayfact (CPS Payroll System)

Mr. Garnier: To ask the Solicitor-General how many senior Crown Prosecution Service staff at grades above level D are High Court advocates; and at how many court sessions such staff advocated in court in each of the last five years. [305449]

The Solicitor-General: The Crown Prosecution Service currently employs 99 staff above level D who are higher court advocates. During the 2008-09 financial year, higher court advocates at level E or above conducted prosecutions at 1,425 sessions in the Crown court or higher courts. The following table shows the data for the last five completed years. For the years since 2007-08, these data include principal crown advocates, whose main function is the preparation and presentation of serious and complex cases at the crown court, as well as other senior lawyers in the CPS whose main function is in managing the operation of the prosecution service in London and across each of the 42 CPS areas. These staff are graded as senior civil servants, chief crown prosecutors, and level E unit heads.
