Custodial Treatment: Shotgun Certificates
Mr. Gray:
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what guidance his Department has issued in respect of the length of time for which a person who has served a custodial sentence in respect of a motoring offence may be refused a shotgun licence. [306814]
Mr. Alan Campbell:
Home Office guidance draws specific attention to the provisions of section 21 of the Firearms Act 1968 which provides that persons who are sentenced to a term of imprisonment of three years or more are prohibited from ever possessing firearms; persons who are sentenced to a term of three months or more but less than three years must not possess firearms until five years have passed since the date of release. Otherwise it is for chief officers to satisfy themselves on the individual merits of each case that an applicant can be permitted to possess a shotgun without danger to public safety or to the peace.
