PRISON COURSES EXAMPLE—OCTOBER 2008

  Request to the R L Glasspool Charity Trust from an open prison for £1,100 to pay for an HGV class 2 licence for a man who has spent the last 22 months in a closed prison and has completed the following courses:

    —  [A17c rough terrain telehandler licence—done in open prison, but little work in building trade at present];—  OCR level 1 certificate for IT users;

    —  OCR levels 1 and 2 adult literacy;

    —  OCR levels 1 and 2 adult numeracy;

    —  Foundation certificate in health and safety in the workplace;

    —  Foundation certificate in food hygiene;

    —  Level 2 award in food safety in catering;

    —  OCN level 2 in cookery;

    —  Drawing for art and design level 2;

    —  Enhanced thinking skills programme;

    —  Victim awareness restorative justice program;

    —  Level 1 an introduction to drug awareness; and

    —  Levels 1 and 2 an introduction to alcohol awareness.

  Clearly some of these courses have aims other than immediate employment, and we would not doubt the value of courses in literacy, numeracy, victim/drug/alcohol awareness, but how do the courses in health and safety/food hygiene/food safety and cookery contribute to his employment prospects?
