MEMORANDUM
ELECTION OF THE BACKBENCH BUSINESS COMMITTEE

Election of Committee Members
       1. The ballot will be held in the division lobbies between 10.00 am and 12.00 noon today, Tuesday 29 June.
       2. Members each have one vote, which is transferable. They place candidates in their preferred order using the figures ‘1’, ‘2’, etc. The figure ‘1’ represents the vote and is mandatory. The other is a contingency marking and is optional but may allow the elector to influence the final result. Members should therefore express preferences until they are unable, or do not wish, to differentiate between any of the remaining candidates.
       The Count
       3. The ballot will be counted under the Single Transferable Vote system. It will be subject to the constraints set out in paragraph (2)(f) of the Order of the House of 15 June (Election of Backbench Business Committee).
       4. The Speaker has announced that, in addition to the Chair, the Committee will be composed of four Conservative members, two Labour and one Liberal Democrat. Nominations may be received only in respect of Members of these parties.
For further details please see the Briefing Note available in the Vote Office and on the intranet.
