Police Reform and Social Responsibility Bill

Memorandum submitted by Ralph Wood (PR 69)

I am writing in support of the proposed changes envisaged in the above Police Reform and Social Responsibility Bill.

In particular, I welcome the introduction of democratic accountability intrinsic to scrapping the present police authorities and replacing them with directly elected police and crime commissioners.

No doubt the present incumbents, supported by their chief constables, will oppose this measure as it will take away the rather cosy insular relationship with which they will have all grown quite comfortable over the years, and turkeys rarely vote for Christmas, but this can only do good in that it will remind all concerned that the interests of the community must come first.
