Superannuation Bill
Memorandum submitted by Paul Sopp (SU 03)
1.
I am a BBSRC employee and have a direct interest in the Superannuation Bill 2010. My post is redundant and I will leave service in 2011 – it is highly likely that my compensation will be capped by the Bill. The point of this communication is to highlight an omission from the Bill.
2.
During the second reading, Francis Maude alluded to the fact that it was expected to be possible to reach a negotiated settlement with the Civil Service Unions that will be better than the compensation payable under the cap imposed by the Bill. There is no provision in the Bill to allow additional compensation payments to be made to individuals unlucky enough to be made redundant whilst the cap is in operation. In the interests of fairness it is essential to include a clause that will allow individuals affected by the cap to receive an additional compensation payment of the balance between what was paid under the cap and that would have been due under the new negotiated terms.
3.
Summary – A clause should be included to allow individuals affected by the cap to receive an additional compensation payment of the balance between what was paid under the cap and the amount that would have been due under the new negotiated terms.
