Written evidence from Katharine Siao-Yue Chang,
Taipei Representative Office in the UK
I am writing to provide you with data on the number of people in mainland China listening to short wave radio program broadcasted from Taiwan. According to the Government Information Office and Radio Taiwan International (RTI):
· There are around 9 million receiving the radio programs broadcasted by RTI. Their methods for estimation are the same as those of the BBC.
· RTI programs can reach the Southern, Central and Northern regions of mainland China using SW & MW.
· Languages used in the broadcast programs include Mandarin, Hokkienese (Taiwanese), Hakka and Cantonese.
· As for wireless TV programs, theoretically those households along the coast would be able to receive the TV signal, however, it would depend on whether they install necessary receiving instruments, such as antennae or satellite dishes. There is no precise numbers in this regard.
I hope that the above mentioned information will be of use. If you have any further enquiries in this regard please do not hesitate to contact me.
