Future of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) - Home Affairs Committee Contents

Correspondence from Mr Jim Gamble to the Chair of the Committee

I am writing to you in your capacity as Chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee. You may recall that I recently came before you to give evidence concerning CEOP's proposed assimilation into the National Crime Agency (NCA). During that session I was asked whether I was going to work for a private sector company and if that in fact was the reason I had decided to leave.

I thought I had made my position absolutely clear to the committee when answering that question. I had not left to join a private sector company and my resignation came about in response to the decision by government to reverse the previous policy to establish CEOP as an independent entity. My objections being based on the fact that I believe such a move was, and is not, in the best interests of children.

I was therefore surprised to learn that at a recent hearing the current CEO of CEOP was asked a question about why I had left and that a member of the committee speculated that I had left to work for one of CEOP's partners in a private sector venture. Can I place on the record once again the fact that this was not the case. I resigned as I opposed the reversal of policy, felt that such a move was not in the best interests of children and lost confidence in the government's approach during the public consultation.

I appreciate the difficult role that both you and the committee have in respect of these important issues and wish you and all your members every success in the future.
