Supplementary evidence from the Ministry
of Justice following the evidence session on
Monday 14 February 2011 (AJ 65)
Further to my appearance before you on Monday evening,
I promised to write with further details concerning the impact
on Housing matters under the proposals, as well as the use of
Guardians ad litem in Family matters.
In relation to the Housing point, the Scope impact
assessment, published here http://www.justice.gov.uk/consultations/docs/legalaidiascope.pdf
outlines the potential impact in this area. Tables 1 and 2 in
that document indicate that the proposals in relation to Housing
would lead to a reduction in case numbers of approximately 40,400,
with attendant savings of approximately £12 million.
In relation to the Family point, the Department for
Education is responsible for the Children and Family Court Advisory
and Support Service (CAFCASS) and that they hold data on the use
of guardians. LSC data does not indicate whether a guardian was
appointed in a matter and as such we are not able to provide information
on the profile of their use in cases over the last five to six
years.
