Improving the effectiveness of parliamentary scrutiny: Various items - Procedure Committee Contents

Letter from Rt Hon Sir Alan Beith MP, Chair, Liaison Committee (P47, 2010-11)

SELECT COMMITTEE AMENDMENTS

Thank you for your letter of 25 November on select committee amendments.

As you know, the Liaison Committee discussed this at our meeting on 2 December. We would like the Procedure Committee to pursue the proposal put forward by your predecessor Committee in the last Parliament, which would allow select committees to table amendments to bills and motions in their own name. We discussed the arguments for and against giving priority to such amendments and felt that your Committee was best placed to consider the principles and practicalities involved.
