The Severn Crossings Toll - Welsh Affairs Committee Contents

Written evidence from Lucy Huff

I am writing to you regarding a recent experience at the toll booth on the old Severn Bridge.

I was not travelling in my car and forgot that I did not have my TAG with me. Unfortunately I did not have any cash with me either. I had gone past the last exit when I realised this was the case.

As you know credit cards are not accepted despite the large amount the toll is and that most people carry credit and debit cards with them at all times.

I asked the lady at the toll if I could turn around and get some money from the local service station. I was informed that this was not allowed. However, living in Chepstow I know many people who have found themselves in any similar situation that have been allowed to turn around.

I was then asked to fill in a form with my name and address which I did, and noticed that I had to pay an extra £5 admin fee.

I think this is outrageous, I have not done anything illegal, just forgotten something after a busy day at work. I understand that the Severn bridge company have a right to ask for a fee but punishing people for been forgetful is not really fair, especially since my family already pay them at least £90 a month, just to go to work and back.

I also wonder why some people in this situation are allowed to turn around and I was not.

I would be grateful to hear your opinion on this matter. If you agree with me then I wonder if there is anything you can do to help change the situation.
