MEMORANDA
QUESTIONS FOR WRITTEN ANSWER: CHANGES TO E-TABLING
On Thursday 13 October the House approved the Procedure Committee’s recommendations on e-tabling of questions for written
answer. These provide for a three month trial period during which limits will be imposed on the ability of Members to e-table
such questions. The changes will come into effect from the rising of the House on Friday 21 October.
What will change
For the duration of the trial period:
• a deadline for e-tabling questions of 6.30 pm or the rising of the House (if earlier) on each sitting day from Monday to
Thursday, and 2.30 pm on sitting and non-sitting Fridays (or the rising of the House if earlier on sitting Fridays) will be
applied; and
• Members will be able to e-table no more than five questions for written answer (named day or ordinary written) each day.
E-tabling for written questions will therefore not be available to Members:
• after 6.30 pm on Mondays to Thursdays; or
• once they have e-tabled five questions for written answer on any one day.
After the 6.30 pm deadline on Mondays to Thursdays Members will not be able to e-table questions for written answer until
the following day.
Any written questions e-tabled after the 2.30 pm deadline on sitting and non-sitting Fridays will count towards a Member’s
quota for the following sitting day.
During a short recess of less than one week, any written questions e-tabled after the House rises for the recess will count
towards a Member’s quota for the first sitting day after the recess.
What will not change
Members will be able to e-table questions for oral answer, including topical questions and questions to the Prime Minister,
just as at present.
The quota of five e-tabled questions and the 6.30/2.30 pm deadline will not affect the ability of Members to table questions
for written answer in hard copy by post or in person.
The daily quota of five named day questions will still apply.
The daily quota for e-tabling written questions will not apply:
• during a recess of a week or more; and
• on the first sitting day after a recess of a week or more.

inclusion in the ‘shuffle’ should be submitted by 12.30 pm on Monday 24 October.
Applications for an adjournment debate for Tuesday 1 November should be submitted to the Table Office by 10.00 pm or the rising
of the House (whichever is the earlier) on Tuesday 25 October. The ballot will take place on Wednesday 26 October.
