MEMORANDUM
PROROGATION AND QUESTIONS
All notices of Questions fall at Prorogation, which is expected to take place on Tuesday 1 May. Questions tabled for answer on a named day after Prorogation will not be answered. Questions for ordinary written answer tabled shortly before Prorogation may not receive a substantive answer before Prorogation. They cannot be answered after Prorogation.
Once Parliament has been prorogued, Members may send notices of Questions relating to the new Session to the Table Office by post or through the e-tabling system. These notices will be treated as having been received on the day of the State Opening.
TABLING QUESTIONS IN THE NEW SESSION
Members may table notices of Questions in person in the Table Office from 9.30 am on Wednesday 9 May, the day of the State Opening.
There will be no Question Time on the first three sitting days of the new Session. Shuffles will take place at 12.30 pm on Wednesday 9 May for the oral Questions being answered on:
(a) Tuesday 15 May by the Secretary of State for Justice, and
(b) Wednesday 16 May by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (subject to the House agreeing to the Motion in the name of Sir George Young on Notices of Questions);
and a shuffle will be held at 12.30 pm on Thursday 10 May for oral questions to the Prime Minister on Wednesday 16 May.
The rota of Departments answering oral questions from Tuesday 15 May will be set out in the Order of Questions which will be issued shortly. It will be available from the Vote Office and via the Parliamentary Intranet at http://www.parliament.uk/documents/commons-table-office/order-of-oral-questions.pdf
The earliest date in the new Session for which a Question may be set down for named day written answer is Monday 14 May.
NEW MOTIONS AND ADDED NAMES
All Motions fall at Prorogation. The last day in the Session on which effective notices of new Motions (including Early Day Motions) and added names can be submitted by Members is the day before Prorogation takes place, Monday 30 April. No new Motions may therefore be tabled on the day of Prorogation nor may any names be added to existing Motions on that day.
New Motions, and added names to them, may be submitted to the Table Office from 9.30 am on Wednesday 9 May.
ADJOURNMENT DEBATES IN THE NEW SESSION
The ballot for end-of-day adjournment debates in the Chamber on Wednesday 9, Thursday 10 and Monday 14 May will take place on Thursday 3 May. Applications should be received by the Table Office (prior to Prorogation) or by the Duty Clerk in the Journal Office (on Wednesday 2 May) by 5 pm on Wednesday 2 May.
There will be no adjournment debates in Westminster Hall until the week beginning 21 May.
