Draft Legislative Reform (Epping Forest) Order 2011 - Regulatory Reform Committee Contents

6  Conclusion

55. The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games promise to be one of the greatest sporting events in UK history. It is also hoped that the Games will be a symbol of the UK's economic vitality, social and cultural renewal, and standing on the global stage.[51] As a result, the safe and secure delivery of a successful Games is a key priority for the Government.

56. Due to the sheer scale of the Games, a variety of policing techniques are required throughout London and the UK. The proposal to erect a MBDC on Wanstead Flats will help the MPS meet their policing and security challenges, particularly in relation to the Olympic Park. Whilst we recommend that the draft Order enabling this to happen should be approved, the manner in which the proposal was presented has caused unnecessary worry amongst some local residents. This situation may have been avoided to a large extent if the Department had taken a more sensitive approach to the consultation process.
